Last Thursday Queen Elisabeth II died. We want to express or condolences and our respect. Pussycat, Pussycat, where have you been? Learning English as a foreign language here in Germany has always had so much to do with Great Britain, London and, of course, the Queen. It seemed unimaginable not to talk about Queen Elisabeth in our English lessons. She was one of the greatest sights of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Her castles and palaces are wonderful sights too. But she was much more than a sight: She was one of her kind: so friendly, so professional, so very disciplined. By the way: Why has it never been the United Queendom? I’ve been to London to visit the Queen. She was not only a role model for discipline and decency, she also had been good motivation for so many learners. She has played a leading role in our stories, she went shopping with us, for she looks from British notes and coins, she has been with us for a tremendously long time. We have always hoped that Queen Elisabeth would stay with us for even longer. Pussycat, Pussycat, what did you there? Great Britain as a monarchy has certainly fascinated many Germans. There are German aristrocrats too, but somehow they don’t click with “noblesse oblige”. Queen Elisabeth did. Now she’s gone.
